Same Story, Different Generation.

It is a reoccurring pattern in which each generation that grows up thinks that the youngest generation at the time is the dumbest/laziest/most apathetic group of people in history. Bauerline is just another of those older folk who like to stand on their soap box and rant about why the Baby boomers are that much more inspired and productive. Our generation will come around the capabilities of the technology available to us. It is often staggering to hear statistics about what our generation does with our own free time but nobody seems to want to offer up information about what the children who were under 20 of any other generation did with their free time. Just because we have technology to fill our time doesn't mean were being any less productive than other generations. I would agree we are being less social, and that technology is inhibiting the process which allows us to develop social communicative skills but the productivity of our generation is another topic of discussion.

  1. I agree that each generation has a negative opinion of the generation after it. No one would like to admit that they are dumber than the younger generation. Everyone thinks that they are the smarter ones. I feel as though each generation is smarter at their own specific task. The generations before ours is extremely hard-working, whereas our generation is good with technology.

  2. After reading the chat with Bauerlien I disagree with the fact that we are not dumb. Bauerlien when asked what his of definition of dumb he was referring to replied with "Dumb only in the sense of not making use of all the extraordinary opportunities, prosperity, schooling, culture, and, yes, technology, to become more learned, eloquent, and informed than previous , generations." He is not calling us total idiots. So in his definition of dumb, I agree with him that we are dumb. We don't go out and seize all the wide array of opportunities out there. I don't think we are the dumbest generation but compared to past generation we could rightly be called dumb in Bauerlein's sense of the definition.

  3. I am really glad that Mariah clarified his definition of dumb. I didn't take the time to read it so I am really glad you said that. I think we are some what dumb in that sense, but I definitely feel like he butchered the use of the word. I like you said we never hear about what other generations did when then were our age. From what I have heard from parents and their friends, they definitely weren't as smart when it comes to common sense. I think that is completely ignored by Bauerlien.

  4. I'm going to agree with Mariah and Taylor on this, as far as his definition of dumb- we are. Maybe we could redeem ourselves by using all of the technology that fills our time for educational purposes instead of 'socializing'. How social are we really, if we can barely hold a conversation with out referencing what i would call text/computer talk (facebook, any acronym we may use, etc.) and even then we are uncomfortable doing so in a face-to-face environment? So in that aspect, i do agree with you brian.

  5. I agree. Each generation is gonna think the younger one is dumb, its a pattern. As far as technology goes. Yeah some of us spend most of our time socializing on the internet but how does he know we're not being productive too? Just because some of us don't spend our time on the internet wisely doesn't mean all of us don't.
